Investigating the Cold Chain Part 1

A few posts back I talked about the lack of developed cold chains as one of the largest challenges in preventing disease in remote locations. A cold chain is a temperature-controlled supply chain. An unbroken cold chain is an uninterrupted series of storage and distribution activities which maintain a given temperature range. It is used to extend and to help ensure the shelf life of products such as chemicals, foods and drugs.
According to the WHO, more than two million deaths have been averted by immunizations*. However, more illnesses could be avoided if temperature-sensitive vaccines were transported and stored correctly. The efficacy of vaccines rests with maintaining optimal temperatures - typically between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius (between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit) - from the place of manufacture to the point of use. Ensuring that the cold supply chains remains stable presents a logistical challenge, especially in developing countries where immunizations are needed the most.
I will be exploring options and methodologies in cold chain development and systems. This is the first post of a multi-post story.
